PAWS-ABILITY BICYCLE POKER RUN
Paws-Ability’s First Annual Bicycle Poker Run, scheduled for Saturday, October 29, will benefit the animal shelters and rescue groups of Brunswick County. Registration for the event will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Ocean Isle Inn on Ocean Isle Beach. Participants will be directed to four locations on the island to draw a card for their poker hand. The event will end with a poolside party at the Ocean Isle Inn. The party will include hot dogs, beer and soft drinks as well as a silent auction. Entry for the Poker Run is $25 per rider; party only is $15.

ATMC-TV AIRS ENTREPRENEURSHIP OPEN
ATMC-TV is proud to have partnered with the Small Business Center Network and Brunswick Community College to bring you the Entrepreneurship Open.
On June 15, 2011 the Small Business Center Directors in southeastern North Carolina hosted the Entrepreneurship Open, Southeast NC at Brunswick Community College’s Leland Center for Economic and Workforce Development. Participating Small Business Centers are located in the following counties: Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Cumberland, New Hanover, Pender, Richmond, Robeson, Sampson, and Scotland.
Forty-seven plans were submitted and the top eight gave their “Rocket Pitch” presentations on June 15th. The top three presentations received cash awards in the amounts of $5,000, $2,500, and $1,500 to be put toward their business startup or expansion.
Tune in to ATMC-TV Channel 3 to find out who the winners are! The show will air Friday, September 23rd through Friday, October 28th, 2011. Show times are Fridays from 12:30 – 2:00 PM and Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 – 9:30 PM.

The first meeting aired on Tuesday, September 20th on ATMC-TV Channel 3 and additional viewings can be seen every Tuesday and Friday night from 8-9 PM. A new meeting will air beginning the second Tuesday of every month.

PAULA DEEN AT BRUNSWICK COMMUNITY COLLEGE

The Brunswick Community College (BCC) Foundation Board is cooking up a fun way to raise money for student scholarships. At noon on Saturday, October 15, the Food Network star and celebrated author Paula Deen, will attend an intimate VIP light luncheon. Afterward, (1 to 2 p.m.) three award-winning chefs-- Eric Masson, Executive chef of The Brentwood in Horry County, Executive chef Jonathan Yuricek of Twin Lakes Seafood of Brunswick County and Executive chef Matt Kahrs of Port City Chop House in New Hanover County-- will each prepare their signature dish while Paula entertains the crowd. Later, Deen will judge each dish and select a winner among the three.
The VIP Meet, Greet and Eat ticket ($500) includes: VIP luncheon, two autographed Paula Deen’s Southern Cooking BIBLE and VIP seating for the event and will be limited to an intimate setting of just 60 guests. The Premier ticket ($150) includes: one autographed Paula Deen’s Southern Cooking BIBLE and premium seating for the event, and is limited to 120 tickets. The FOL Board will be meeting in September to, among other things, start assembling a slate of Officers for next year's FOL Board.
This is a call for nominations for candidates to serve on the Board of the Friends of the Leland Library for the Year 2011. We are inviting you to share your time and expertise with the FOLL and the Community it serves.

*** FOLL Board Brief Position Descriptions ********************
While each position may demand more or less time from each individual, one can expect to commit to at least four, one-hour Board meetings a year, two General Membership Meetings of about two-hours each, plus committee and individual work needed to fulfill the duties of their respective office (plan about 2 to 5 hours a week maximum).

President - Responsible to overall management and direction of the FOLL's activities. The President has signing authority to commit the FOLL to obligations and activities in support of our mission to the Leland Public Library.

Vice-President - to serve in the absence of, in as replacement of the President should that person not be able to fulfill their responsibilities.

Secretary - Responsible for capture and accurate recording of FOLL meetings and formal activities of the FOLL and its Board.

Treasurer - Accounting, book-keeping, tax-reporting and management of all financial activities of the FOLL. Reports to the Board and is responsible for an annual audit of the books.

Book Sale Chairman - Responsible for organizing monthly FOLL Book Sales (currently being held at The Magnolia House). Works in coordination with the Volunteer Coordinator to have volunteers to fully staff the monthly book sales. Responsible for organizing, gathering and maintaining all book donations as received.

Corresponding Secretary - Responsible for collection, and management of membership information including issuing notices for renewal. Responsible for accurate maintenance of address and email distribution lists for active FOLL membership. Acts as the focal point for out-going communications to the membership from the Board.

Volunteer Coordinator - Responsible for identifying persons willing and able to assist in supporting the FOLL at both the FOLL's Magnolia House and in the Leland Library. Coordinates schedules, workload, responsibilities, and motivation of all FOLL Volunteers. Works in coordination with the Leland Library Staff and the FOLL Book Sale Manager.

Publicity Officer - Responsible for maintaining interest and awareness of the FOLL its activities, and goals for supporting Leland Public Library. Acts as official spokesperson for the FOLL when necessary in coordination with the Board. Responsible for activity engaging the at-large community via all media channels; mail, online (Twitter, Facebook, email, the FOLL Blog, Buzz, and other appropriate means). Responsible for generating and distributing News Releases about major FOLL events and activities to regional news and publicity organizations by the most effective, timely, means possible. Must be internet savvy.

The CIS "Action for Success" program at Leland Middle School is looking for volunteer mentors for sutdents in grades 6-8. Mentors would meet with their student during lunch (Lunch Buddies) once a week for 25-30 minutes. Unity Group Craft Fair
The Unity Group of North Brunswick will hold a Craft Fair on Saturday, October 15 from 8 am to 3 pm at the Leland Municipal Park, 102 Town Hall Dr. This event will give local craftsmen, businesses, candidates and other vendors the opportunity to showcase their products and services. Concessions will be available. Booths are $35 and all proceeds will go to the North Carolina Christmas Festival's Children's Activities. There is no cost to attend! October 29 - Leland Trunk or Treat
* What: Want to take your kids trick or treating in a safe, fun environment? Then Leland's Trunk or Treat event is for you. We are asking businesses, community organizations and parents to decorate their trunks and pass out goodies on Halloween evening. There will be prizes for the most impressive displays. The Town will provide treats and bouncy rides for the kids. The Unity Group of North Brunswick will be on hand selling hot dogs, chips and drinks.

Leland's Little Learners

Leland Community Garden
* What: The Town of Leland Community Garden has several plots available for Fall/Winter gardens. The garden provides a supportive environment where local gardeners can exchange ideas and knowhow while having fun at the same time with their neighbors. Individual plots are available in the following sizes: 10'x20', 10'x10' and 4'x10'. Participants may also chose to garden the community plot where all produce will be donated to the Manna Ministries food bank. There is no charge for the plots and water is provided on site. The Town is now accepting applications and plots will be assigned on a first-come, first served basis. If you are interested, please stop by the Leland Parks and Recreation office to pick up an application.

The Friends of the Leland Library will hold ta huge book sale this Saturday, Oct. 8 from 10 am until 2 pm at the Magnolia House, 485 Village Rd. NE adjacent to the Leland Library. Come meet Julianna Morgan, author of Zach's Tracks. She will be there signing copies of her books and will be reading excerpt. Bring you kids for a fun time!
